how jesus rewrote my story

My name is Vickie, and I was born on August 14, 1973.

When I was only nine months old, my dad tragically drowned on June 2, 1974. His birthday was the very next day, June 3. My brother was four years old, and from that moment on, it was just my mom, my brother, and me. Life wasn’t always easy.

We struggled in many ways, but looking back now, I can clearly see that Jesus was protecting us and carrying us even when we didn’t realize it.

For many years, I carried a deep hurt because I never had the chance to know my dad. I longed for a father’s love, and without realizing it, I spent my teenage years searching for that love in relationships. I went from one relationship to another, hoping someone could fill the emptiness in my heart. What I didn’t know then was that the love I had been searching for had always been available through my Heavenly Father.

When I was sixteen, my mom married my stepdad. He was a good man, but because I was a rebellious teenager, I never allowed myself to become close to him.

At twenty-one, I got married, and at twenty-three, I had my beautiful daughter. Sadly, instead of my marriage getting stronger, it became much worse.

For nearly eighteen years, I endured mental abuse, physical abuse, betrayal, and unfaithfulness. Time after time I would leave, he would promise to change, and I would go back, hoping things would be different. It became a revolving door of pain.

Eventually, my husband introduced me to drugs. Before long, I was addicted. Looking back, I realize that addiction became another way for him to control me. I loved him so much that I convinced myself staying was the right thing to do because I wanted my daughter to grow up with both a mom and a dad. Since I had lost my own father so young, I didn’t want her to experience that same loss.

What I failed to realize was that children see much more than we think they do. As my daughter grew older, she witnessed the abuse and dysfunction in our home. Staying in that relationship ultimately hurt her far more than leaving ever would have.

One night, after staying awake for days because of the drugs, I stood outside watching what I thought was a party happening at a nearby house. I could see people everywhere. Finally exhausted, I went to bed. The next morning, I realized there had never been a party at all. Everything I had seen was a hallucination caused by the drugs. That moment changed everything. For the first time, I saw where the life I was living was leading me. I knew I was done with that lifestyle.

The Lord, in His mercy, had spared my life. He protected me from overdosing and gave me another chance. That was the beginning of my journey toward recovery.

Not long after, God gave me the strength and courage to finally leave my abusive marriage. Life was still incredibly hard. I often worked two jobs, and sometimes even three, just to provide for my daughter and me. Those years taught me perseverance, responsibility, and sacrifice.

After years of healing and rebuilding my life, I watched my daughter graduate from high school. Today she is an amazing mother to two beautiful children, and I thank God that I get to enjoy being their grandmother. God wasn’t finished writing my story.

He blessed me with an incredible husband—a man who loves the Lord with all his heart. Looking back now, I can see that God never once let go of my hand. Even when I wasn’t walking closely with Him, He remained faithful to me.

For many years, I believed in God. I prayed. I thanked Him. I tried to be a good person. But I didn’t truly know Him. I didn’t understand what it meant to have a real relationship with Jesus. I thought Christianity simply meant praying, thanking God, and trying my best.

Everything changed when my husband and I were led to a church that welcomed us with open arms. For the first time, we began learning who Jesus truly is. The Scriptures came alive, and it was as if a light had finally been turned on.

At forty-nine years old, on Father’s Day, I was baptized. What a perfect day to fully surrender my life to my one true Father—my Heavenly Father.

Since then, Jesus has completely transformed my life. He has delivered me from addiction, the fear of man, anxiety, depression, shame, and so much more. He continues to change me every single day.

As I grew in my relationship with Jesus and spent time in His Word, He began healing the broken places in my heart. He taught me what true forgiveness looks like. Through His grace, I was able to forgive my ex-husband. Forgiveness didn’t mean what happened was okay, and it didn’t erase the past. It meant I was no longer allowing the hurt to control my life.

Jesus replaced bitterness with His peace and gave me the ability to love as He loves. That freedom was a gift only He could give. As I began serving at church, I started taking photographs. Through my camera, I witnessed people being baptized, worshipping, praying, and experiencing freedom in Christ. Capturing those moments stirred something deep inside my heart.

I fell in love with telling God’s stories through photography. That passion eventually led me to create testimony photo sessions—helping people visually share how Jesus brought them out of darkness and into His marvelous light. God also redeemed a relationship I never expected.

The man I had kept at a distance as a rebellious sixteen-year-old became someone I dearly loved. God graciously restored the relationship between my stepdad and me, and I was blessed to spend the last four months of his life by his side, caring for both him and my mom through his illness. During that time, God gave me the incredible privilege of talking with him about the Lord. We prayed together, and I was able to walk him through repentance.

He recommitted his life to Jesus and witnessing that transformation was one of the most beautiful and meaningful moments of my life. It reminded me that God’s grace is never too late and that He faithfully pursues those He loves until the very end. Then God placed another dream in my heart…

His Grace Rewrote My Story. This testimony journal was born because I believe no one should ever be ashamed of what God has delivered them from. Our past is not our identity—God’s grace is.

We are not perfect, and we never will be. But through Jesus Christ, we can be forgiven. When we repent, stand on God’s Word, and fully surrender our lives to Him, He is faithful to transform us.

The journey won’t always be easy. But I can promise you this… Jesus is worth every step.

My story isn’t about what I’ve been through. It’s about what Jesus has done. His grace rewrote my story… and He is still rewriting lives today.
